What kind of people run a marathon? Who knows, but there are about 8,000 of them in the country and they were all in Brighton yesterday. Similarly, what kind of people get up at 4 or 5am on a Sunday to volunteer at helping out a marathon. There were only 1,700 of those available yesterday, but boy they are crazy.

By 7am we were unloading pallets of water, powerade and bananas, by 8, unpacking hundreds of tin foil blankets and by 9 putting sponsor banners on the railings around the finish. And then the race started! After2 hours of waiting around doing not much, some minor celebrity doing the race in a wheelchair came rolling through the finish, followed shortly after by runner after runner after runner, ad infinitum. They kept coming until after 4, when we were finally allowed to go. Straight to bed in my case.
